Who needs to file

Who needs to file?

U.S. citizens and resident aliens living abroad must still file U.S. tax returns and report worldwide income. Depending on your income, you might also need to file additional forms, like the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555) or the Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116).

You can exclude a certain amount of your foreign earned income ($120,000 for 2023) from your U.S. taxes if you meet specific criteria, such as passing the bona fide residence or physical presence tests.

If you pay taxes to a foreign country, you might be eligible for a credit that can reduce your U.S. tax liability.

Although the U.S. tax filing deadline is April 15th, expats receive an automatic extension to June 15th, with a possible further extension to October 15th if requested.

Expats may also need to consider other forms like the FBAR (for foreign bank accounts) and FATCA, which require reporting of foreign financial assets.
